puppy or no puppy

We lost our dog about a year ago. He was an 11 year old Weimeraner named Suede. He was the ultimate dog and my best friend/hunting companion for all his life. I had to lay him down due to seizures. The kids are now hitting me up for another dog and I just don't want to do it. Some of it is we still have a one year old in diapers and alot of it is that I just don't want to get a dog that won't measure up to the Suede and I miss him. So at what point do we get another puppy? I told the kids when there is no more diapers being worn in the house which is about a year away I guess. Do we get the same dog or a different breed? Male or female?

  1. I am sorry to hear that your dog passed away. Our pets can be like family or even our best friends. I think you children will be happy with a dog no matter what breed you choose. I am a cat person myself, never owned a dog. I would let the kids pick the dog out, that would spare you the decision of picking.

  2. I have an epileptic dog, Benny, so I know how devastating seizures can be. Luckily he's doing okay on four different medicines right now, but if I ever come to class looking like death warmed over, you'll know I spent the night coping with a seizure cluster. You'll never find a dog to replace Suede, but there are a lot of dogs looking for homes who will give your kids years of love.

  3. I grew up it a mixed breed dog that was part chow and part golden retriever. I can say it was the best dog my family has ever had. It was a great family dog and was extremely tolerant of children. It did have one flaw however. It did not like any other dogs or animals. I just hope the info I give is helpful

  4. I know what it is like to have a dog pass away :( I had a dog that I had ever since I was little, and when he died I had like a panic attack and almost had to go to the hospital, we were holding him as the doctor put him to sleep, he was having congestive heart failure. I have two beautiful Rat Terrier girls now named Avril and Buffy. I personally love small dogs because they are easy to take everywhere with you, and they can jump on you and sit on your lap and you dont have to feel the pressure of a huge dog haha.

    1. Is Buffy named after Buffy the Vampire Slayer?

  5. Losing a pet sometimes feels like losing both a friend and a family member at once. I am not a dog owner but I lost a cat and I still miss her.

I would say yes, get a dog, but maybe don't get the same breed as Suede. That way you don't have to feel like you're replacing him.

Suede was your best friend and companion. If your children are still young, another dog might be a good idea so that they can also know the joy of a family dog.

Hope this was helpful. I wish you luck!

  6. Sorry to hear about your dog, that is quite sad. I had a 17 year old chocolate Lab that passed after she began having seizures as well.

  7. Also sorry to hear about your four legged friend. I lost my boxer/pit mix last x-mas. They truly are families best friend. I still miss him and so do my kids.

  8. I am sorry to hear about your dog.. I had a dog (we called her "Muna") that my mother had to get rid of and told my sister and I that she took ehr to a farm where she could run and have more space. Only in the last year did I learn what the farm meant :(

On a happier note your blog is amazing!!! I love the funny pictures to the Grunge music reference. I am a huge fan of this genre and feel it was paved by the previous minds, and also paved the way for current listenings!
